Tomorrow’s Keeper

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

Proverbs 27:1 ESV

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”

James 4:13‭-‬15 ESV

If the Lord wills, we will live to see another day. If He doesn’t, we won’t. All things are in His hands.

That might sound fatalistic, but there’s peace in knowing it is God who numbers our days. We don’t know when our time is up. In light of that, what should we do today? Live authentically for Christ. That’s what I’m betting on as being the most productive use of my time.

God’s will is perfect. His timing is perfect. Everything He does is perfect. We may not understand it but it’s true. Our perception is limited. He knows all things. Our understanding is limited. His way is perfect.

A friend pointed out that I still had some pride in me. I’m not dead yet. Today, the Lord led me to James 4:13. Perhaps to correct, perhaps to comfort. I keep trying to figure out a plan for the future, but the future isn’t promised. Perhaps my lack of a plan is okay with God. I’m okay with that.

I think I would take control if I knew God’s plan instead of relying on Him to lead me day by day. In fact, I now remember a vision the Lord gave me when I received prayer for this very issue at a pastors meeting a couple years ago.

God is with me. He is guiding me. The path is level and smooth, but there are many turns that I can’t see around. But we’re going there together.

He has His arm over my shoulder, shepherd’s staff in His hand. There are many twists and turns, but the ground is level. The path is narrow. Only wide enough for two to travel side by side.

He is with me in everything. Always at my right hand. He is pointing towards the future. We’re going to walk there together. I can’t see Him in the natural, but He is there in the spiritual. I’m never alone. God is with me, what can mere mortals do to me?

If we know God, that’s enough. What else is there really? Everything else will be consumed in the fire. Why worry about temporary things? Focus on the eternal. What’s really important? Staying in step with the Spirit of God.

This life is not about me. It’s not about us. Or them. Or anyone, other than our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. When we’re in Christ, we become part of something much greater than ourselves. We don’t exist apart from it. We are all interconnected.

Lord, forgive us of our arrogance, our conceit, and our pride, which are all disgusting to You. Grant us humble hearts of service. Let us not think higher of ourselves than we ought. You alone are worthy of praise. You alone do all things well. Give us wisdom to follow You step by step, day by day, abiding in Your love. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen

“So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
