Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat, so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long, and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others. But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers. And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ. The greatest among you shall be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”Matthew 23:1-12 ESV
A year or two ago, the Lord spoke to me and said, “I want them to follow Me, not each other.”
As ministers of the Gospel, our goal should be to help people trust and follow Jesus. That requires that we actually trust God to lead people by the Holy Spirit.
As disciplemakers, our goal is not to amass an audience of faithful followers dependent on our teachings. We want to equip people to recognize God’s voice for themselves and encourage them to obey it wholeheartedly. We want to empower people to follow Jesus, wherever that may take them.
Think of the family unit. You don’t grow your family by inviting your friends over to your house. You grow by having children. Disciples make new disciples.
The greatest need in the Body of Christ right now is for believers who are willing and able to train others in how to make true disciples of Jesus that actually follow Jesus according to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Resist the temptation to do things the way the world does. Do things the way Jesus did. Go and make disciples. Obey your Father in Heaven. Be led by the Spirit and live the abundant life.
Father God, we exalt You as Lord over our lives who leads us, guides us, teaches us and provides for us. Forgive us for going our own way and listening to other voices over Yours. Give us ears to hear what the Spirit is saying to Your Church. We are Your children. Give us hearts to obey You. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.John 10:27 ESV
