Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And he said, “Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day. It was also written that this message would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’ You are witnesses of all these things.
“And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”
Luke 24:45-49 NLT
We talk often about going and making disciples but it’s important to be properly equipped before you go and do so.
Jesus spent the majority of his public ministry teaching, training and equipping his disciples. They inherited His ministry. After all that training and subsequent commissioning to go make disciples, He told them to wait.
They had witnessed Jesus’ ministry firsthand. He taught them to do what He did. They experienced successful ministry by healing the sick, casting out demons and preaching repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
Yet, they were told to wait for the pouring out of the Holy Spirit. Before you go, be clothed in power. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is required by Jesus before He sends his disciples to go reach the world with His teachings.
Repent and be baptized in the Holy Spirit. Get equipped to do what Jesus did. Then, go and make disciples.
Lord, may we do everything properly and in order as You commanded. Amen.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts of the Apostles 1:8 NLT
