No Festivals Required

Therefore let no one judge you in regard to food and drink or in regard to [the observance of] a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day.

Colossians 2:16 AMP

When Christ came, He fulfilled the Old Covenant and established a New Covenant. The old has passed away, behold all things are new. All things are covered by love and grace. There is no longer any obligation or requirement to Old Testament law.

Why do I mention this? To remind you that you are free in Christ to love God and others as the Holy Spirit leads you to. Religious legalism has no place in the life of a disciple of Jesus. There are no festivals required.

To be clear, Old Testament feast days are not binding for Christians, as they foreshadowed Christ’s redemptive work. Observance is a matter of personal conviction, not divine mandate.

So don’t let anyone condemn you for what you eat or drink, or for not celebrating certain holy days or new moon ceremonies or Sabbaths.

For these rules are only shadows of the reality yet to come. And Christ himself is that reality.

Colossians 2:16-17 NLT

You are free to do what the Spirit leads you to.

Don’t let anyone condemn you by insisting on pious self-denial or the worship of angels, saying they have had visions about these things. Their sinful minds have made them proud, and they are not connected to Christ, the head of the body. For he holds the whole body together with its joints and ligaments, and it grows as God nourishes it.

Colossians 2:18-19 NLT

You can observe certain days of the week as holy or you can observe every day as holy.

In the same way, some think one day is more holy than another day, while others think every day is alike. You should each be fully convinced that whichever day you choose is acceptable.

Romans 14:5 NLT

With regards to Jewish and Christian festivals, there is no requirement to observe any of them. Nor are you condemned if you do. Only do whatever the Lord leads you to do. Don’t judge others if they don’t understand our freedom in Christ. Open their eyes with the truth in love.

There is one day coming when we will all stand before the Lord and have to give an account for our lives. Did we faithfully serve the Lord or did we return to slavery to external rules and regulations? Let us always keep in step with the Spirit.

Prayer Points

  • Consider what the Lord is asking you to do.
  • Ask God to reveal where you have been acting out of religious legalism or societal peer pressure.
  • Ask for the Lord’s forgiveness and the freedom to walk in the Spirit.

Lord God in Heaven, forgive us for bowing to religious tradition instead of the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Free us from a spirit of religion. Deliver us from antichrist teachings. Let us be nourished by the pure words of God. Sanctify Your people. Amen.

So why do you condemn another believer? Why do you look down on another believer? Remember, we will all stand before the judgment seat of God.

For the Scriptures say, “‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bend to me, and every tongue will declare allegiance to God.’”

Yes, each of us will give a personal account to God.
