Teach Me To Love

“By this we know love, that He laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.”

1 John 3:16–18

The cross did not define love — it demonstrated it. Jesus did not explain love from a distance; He embodied it up close. He laid down His life, His rights, His reputation, and His comfort.

John does not give us permission to admire this kind of love. He gives us a mandate to imitate it.

We ought to lay down our lives.

Not someday. Not theoretically. Not when it is convenient. Now.

Biblical love always costs something. If it costs nothing, it is likely sentiment, not love.

The Test of Love Is Proximity

Scripture does not ask whether we feel love. It asks whether we close our heart when need is close enough to interrupt us.

Love is tested when:

  • Someone needs time you planned to keep
  • Someone needs mercy when you prefer justice
  • Someone needs help when you would rather stay unseen

If the love of God abides in us, it will eventually confront our comfort.

You cannot follow a foot-washing Savior and remain above serving.

Jesus Chose the Towel

The hands that formed galaxies chose a basin.

The King of glory knelt.

This is not a side lesson of the Kingdom — this is the way of the Kingdom.

Jesus did not serve because it was required. He served because love compelled Him.

Will we choose the towel, or will we protect our position?

Love Must Be Activated

Love that stays internal eventually becomes self-focused. Love that moves outward becomes Christlike.

Ask yourself honestly:

  • Who has God placed in front of me that I have avoided?
  • Where have I said “someone else will help”?
  • What inconvenience has the Spirit been inviting me into?

This is not about striving. This is about yielding.

The Spirit is not asking you to love harder — He is asking you to get out of the way.

The Holy Spirit Empowers Us to Love Like Jesus

Jesus never commands what the Spirit will not empower. Every call to love like Christ is backed by the indwelling life of Christ.

The Holy Spirit is the active trainer of Christlike love, forming Jesus in real time, real relationships, and real cost.

He Confronts Counterfeit Loves

Before love can grow, rivals must die.

The Holy Spirit exposes what competes with love:

  • Pride that needs recognition
  • Fear that avoids vulnerability
  • Self-preservation that resists sacrifice

This exposure often feels like pressure or holy discomfort. That is not God withdrawing — it is God removing resistance.

If love feels costly, it is because something lesser is being dethroned.

He Rewrites Our Reflexes

The Spirit does not merely correct behavior; He retrains reactions.

Over time, fruit becomes evident:

  • Slower offense
  • Quicker repentance
  • Deeper compassion

This is not personality adjustment. This is Christ being formed within you.

You are not striving to act like Jesus from the outside. Jesus is learning how to live through you.

He Interrupts Us on Purpose

The Holy Spirit specializes in interruptions because love is rarely scheduled.

That nudge you felt.
That interruption you wanted to avoid.
That person you could not ignore.

These were not distractions — they were assignments.

Most failures to love are not refusals, but delays. The Spirit trains us to obey now.

He Supplies Power at the Point of Obedience

The Holy Spirit does not front-load power. He releases it as we step forward.

When you say yes:

  • Grace replaces irritation
  • Courage overtakes fear
  • Strength overrides insecurity
  • Love becomes possible because God Himself moves when you move.

Reflect & Respond

Do not spiritualize this moment. The Spirit is not asking what you believe about love. He is asking what you are doing with it.

  • Who has God clearly put in front of me that I have chosen not to love?
  • What obedience have I delayed while calling it discernment?
  • Where am I protecting comfort instead of laying down my life?

Identify one person. Take one concrete step within 24 hours. Do it quietly.

If love does not move your body, it has not yet ruled your heart.

Activation Prayer

Holy Spirit, I yield my heart to Your work. Expose what hinders love and form the heart of Jesus within me. Give me courage to obey quickly. Teach me to love in deed and truth. In Jesus’ name, amen.
